To complete our midterm, you will need to listen to “Facts Aren’t Enough: The Psychology of False Beliefs,” an episode from the podcast Hidden Brain. You’ll need to listen to the ENTIRE podcast to do this work well, and you may even need to listen to parts of it more than once. Give yourself ample time (i.e., multiple days) to complete this midterm.
Your assignment is to find five (5) rhetorical devices we’ve learned about this semester and discuss how they’re operating within the podcast episode. You should cite both the episode and Crowley and Hawhee’s text in your answers.
Choose from the below list of rhetorical devices:
- kairos
- commonplaces
- stasis theory (or the four questions of stasis)
- enthymeme (logos)
- historical example (logos)
- maxim (logos)
- analogy (logos)
- ethopoeia, or inventing ethos
- enargeia (pathos)
- honorific or encomium (pathos)
- pejorative language or inventive (pathos)
- extrinsic proofs
Since I expect you to integrate evidence from both our textbook and the podcast, you should probably write at least one paragraph per rhetorical device to thoroughly demonstrate how that device is represented in the podcast.
DUE DATE & DELIVERY
You will post your completed midterm as a NEW PAGE to your blog no later than midnight on Wednesday, October 30th.
